Comfort Zone = Coping Zone

It's important that we keep it real with ourselves. We have gotten used to certain terminology meaning a certain "thing" and we think that we are doing well. If we changed our thinking behind a phrase, we can change our actions behind the phrase.

This past weekend, I was a facilitator/healer/speaker at the Broken Pieces Retreat organized by one of my tribe sisters. One gem that I dropped that what we consider a comfort zone is really just our coping zone. We love to think that our comfort zone is just that. The place where we feel comfortable and find comfort.  The place where we're safe. A place of familiarity. Thinking about it this way makes us feel better.

If we were keeping it real with ourselves, we would be honest with ourselves and say this is our place of coping. The place we retreat to when life, people, and situations get uncomfortable... We go here so we don't have to deal with those situations, people, ideologies etc that challenge us. We go here when we don't want to grow. In this place is mediocrity and stagnation. In this place, we tell ourselves that it's ok not to move past barriers we've created. We've limited our lives in every aspect, so we are forced to think we are comfortable, when we're really just coping.

That's not cool. Pursuing purpose doesn't always allow time for being comfortable. Starting that business will not be comfortable. Going after that job is not going to be comfortable. Get "comfortable" with being uncomfortable.
